When Visit Carson Valley contacted us about the visit, we were unable to highlight it on the map. We only knew about Carson City. After research, we learned that Carson Valley, although close to Carson City, is the oldest region in Nevada. It includes even the first established city. After the visit we can see why so many people fell in love with the area and never left. It is certainly a hidden gem.
The Carson Valley is made up of four communities: Gardnerville, Genoa, Minden and Lake Topaz.
Gardnerville i Everything they merge into one another. Some of the locals even call it Mindenville. These two cities are the heart of the area with delicious places to eat, shops and boutiques and all the convenient large shops.
As you explore, you will notice historic buildings that I highly recommend you inquire about and hear stories about their past, enjoying what they have become.
Genoa, the first foreign settlement in Nevada, felt like the most important small town. When we met the local Sue Knight, it seemed like we were walking around the city of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls. Everyone was smiling and waving, and Sue’s name was on every board in town. They also hold various festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
Lake Topaz there was one area we didn’t explore much (we’ll just save it for future travel). It is a beautiful area known for water sports and is also a great place for camping.
On top of all that, Carson Valley makes an amazing base for other destinations. It is only 30 minutes from Lake Tahoe, less than an hour from Reno and only 2-3 hours from Yosemite National Park,, Mono Lake, i bishop.
