Two people died and eight people were injured in a shooting during a “chaotic night” on the shores of Virginia Beach, authorities said.
Police officers patrolling the resort heard multiple gunshots around 11:20 p.m. Friday, Virginia Beach Police said news.
The shooting began when a group of people “were involved in some kind of conflict that resulted in a physical fight.” the police said Saturday.
“At some point during the physical altercation, several individuals produced firearms and started firing at each other, resulting in the wounding of numerous people,” police said.
Several police officers responded to the shooting and found eight people who had been shot and who had serious life-threatening injuries.,, the police said.
“Minutes later,” as officers managed the crowd that had gathered at the scene, officers heard more gunshots nearby.
Police officers who responded to the second shooting found a woman with gunshot wounds who died at the scene. Police said the second shooting was “currently not believed” to be related to the initial incident.
Meanwhile, a third shooting occurred in the same area of the second shooting when a police officer “encountered an armed citizen,” resulting in a police officer shooting the man fatally, police said.
The officer was not identified and was placed on an administrative task pending an investigation, according to standard procedure, the department said. The officer worked with the department for five years.
“At some point” during the three shootings, another police officer was also hit by a car and taken to hospital, police said. The officer was treated and released.
“We have a very chaotic incident, a very chaotic night,” Police Chief Paul Neudigate told reporters Friday night.
Several people have been detained, but how they are linked to separate shootings remains under investigation, the chief said. No suspicious information was immediately available.
The two full blocks that made up the city parking lot were still blocked by police tape on Saturday. Dozens of cars were at the crime scene, and officers inspected some of them. A few blocks away, a car surrounded by police tape sat in the middle of the street.
Akereia Drayton, who was still waiting to pull out her car on Saturday, told the Associated Press that she left the club on Friday night after the shooting ended and saw “mass chaos” and many people running.
“People were literally falling over themselves,” Drayton said. “There was a mass swarm of people who came to get their cars. And then there was a wreck.”
Kevin Robertson, who lives a few houses away from the parking lot, said he was on his porch when the shooting began. He said the shooting lasted about 15 minutes.
“There were definitely two or three guns,” he said, adding that he could hear gunshots coming from different parts of his house as time went on.
Bill Feis, who also lives a few houses away from the parking lot, said he was in bed and could hear people talking loudly before the shooting, which he said “sounds like someone threw a package of firecrackers.”
