AB de Villiers says he will talk to South African head coach Mark Boucher about a possible international return at this year’s T20 World Cup in India.

De Villiers achieved over 20,000 runs for Proteas in the Test, ODI and T20I formats between 2004 and international retirement in 2018.

The 35-year-old – who spoke after breaking 76, not 34 of the balls in the IPL victory of the Royal Challengers Bangalore over the Kolkata Knight Riders – said he could return to the World Cup in short form in October and November.

De Villiers said, “We [himself and Boucher] were lined up to talk somewhere during the IPL. But, yes, we have already talked about it. Last year he asked me if I would be interested. And I said, ‘absolutely’.

“Towards the end of the IPL, we will see where we are given my form and my fitness, as well as the situation with his team.

“She has to look at her guys who have been behaving well lately. If there’s no room for me, so be it. If I manage to get in there, it’s going to be fantastic if all that stuff falls into place.”

De Villiers has hit 68 half-centuries and four hundred in his 328 T20 games for clubs and the state, amassing 9,236 runs at a strike rate of 150.61 and an average of 37.69.

He hit 34 balls against Kolkata on Sunday with 34 balls – which helped RCB to a third consecutive win to start the tournament – he saw that he hit nine fours and three sixes and scored above 223.
