At home in Connecticut on River Road Farm

Fifteen years ago, Robb Nestor and Bill Reynolds discovered what would become a masterpiece – the work of their creative endeavors. “We searched for two years before we found the River Road farm and from the first time we drove, it just appealed to us. I think we both knew right away that we had found a home. “Join me and Susanna visiting Robb and Bill behind the scenes at their historic home and garden in Connecticut.

Located in the charming hamlet of Hadlyme, CT, the house is located on a country lane, not far from the Connecticut River. One of the most appealing aspects of the property for Robb and Bill was that, unlike many old houses in New England, it was set back from the road.

Starting with an empty 11-acre slate, Robb, armed with a horticultural degree and an Atlanta landscaping company, and Bill, who came from a family of passionate gardeners, gradually turned the estate into a lush and green garden paradise.

For about the first decade or so, they came back and forth from Atlanta, with only brief visits to the River Road Farm. They planted gradually, each time returning with fresh eyes and new ideas. Rob and Bill designed, installed and maintained everything themselves, so it’s always on their minds as they continue to transplant and trim their gardens.

Their love for old homes inspired the duo to just modestly renovate a country house with delicate additions that respect the past and original structure, and as passionate collectors they discovered that everything effortlessly fits, either inside or out, as it should always have been there.

As Robb and Bill continue to update the garden with regard to the seasons of New England, so they have added several outbuildings, the most recent building being away from the main house, without electricity, where they enjoy partying in the warmer months.
