Ballistic Materials And Hardening Materials

As a giant jigsaw puzzle, Spall Liners must be able to fit perfectly in order to avoid damage to upholstery. Charles Kirkland, an Upholstery Branch machine tool operator for over six and a half years explains that a spall liner is like a puzzle: if a piece isn’t compatible with the other, the entire assembly will fail. The machine shop at the Upholstery Branch will produce components in accordance with the orders received from the installation. These orders can include seals, gaskets cork products, as well as paper products. Charles Kirkland explains that the parts of the spall liner are made by putting them into the correct press.

The projectile’s impact creates a bulge What are Spall Liners by dissipating the force created by successive layers. The steel sheets form the bulge and the projectile gets broken up by them when it strikes them. The barrier is strengthened by the unpenetrated fabric layers that act as a tension to absorb forces. The fragments remain within the bulge after impact, and don’t reach the area of target.

This is why Ballistic and Spill Liners are designed to reduce weight while increasing durability. They can be made of non-metallic materials such as ceramic fiber , or high tensile weave fabric, which is a departure from traditional armor plates that are ballistic. These materials have low weight and are highly resistant to ballistics, making them a better option over metal-based armor plates. They also lower the risk of damage from high-speed collisions.

Spall liners shield the vehicle from damage caused by collisions and also prevent them from being damaged due to fragmentation. Spall liners are usually made from Dyneema or Kevlar and are a component of a number of AFVs armor. Some of these additional pieces of armor are referred to as applique armor. Spall Liners are a great addition to vehicle protection. They can be used to prevent weapons from getting into the original armor.
