As a giant jigsaw puzzle, Spall Liners must be able to fit perfectly in order to avoid damage to upholstery. Charles Kirkland, an Upholstery Branch machine tool operator for over six and a half years explains that a spall liner is like a puzzle: if a piece isn’t compatible with the other, the entire assembly will fail. The machine shop at the Upholstery Branch will produce components in accordance with the orders received from the installation. These orders can include seals, gaskets cork products, as well as paper products. Charles Kirkland explains that the parts of the spall liner are made by putting them into the correct press.

Spall liners are usually made from Dyneema or Kevlar and are a component of a number of AFVs armor. Some of these additional pieces of armor are referred to as applique armor. Spall Liners are a great addition to vehicle protection. They can be used to prevent weapons from getting into the original armor.
