Bethany Shriever added a world title to her Olympic crown as she won a gold medal in Tokyo 2020 at the Women’s BMX World Championships.

Shriever, 22, came to victory in the final after a collision between three drivers that erupted current world champion Alice Willoughby of the United States.

The former assistant is the first woman to wear both BMX supercross titles at the same time.

Judy Baauw was second and third Dutch compatriot Laura Smulders.

Shriever, who started in the eighth lane, looked elated as she crossed the border at Arnhem in the Netherlands to seek her second title in three weeks.

After the race, the Olympic champion said “it’s hard to believe” what happened.

“I rode consistently and just wanted to go outside and have a good time, like I did in Tokyo.” she said.

“I went to gate eight, I was relaxed and happy. I had a good start and I just managed to dig in and take the win. I’m appalled!”

Shriever controlled the race from start to finish thanks to her dazzling pace that passed through the gate.

Her outer position, which Shriever said felt “pretty cold,” went in her favor as she avoided getting caught in a tangle in the first corner between Willoughby, American Felicia Stancil, and Swiss rider Zoe Claessens.

Shriever’s success story is remarkable, given the situation she found herself in two years ago.

The then 19-year-old, who won the junior world title in 2017, said it was “worrying” that she had to crowdfund £ 50,000 in an attempt to compete at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Her dream of representing the UK was not only realized, but she eventually succeeded look for gold in style by retaining two-time champion Mariana Payon in the final.

“Thanks for watching guys: Mom, Dad, Brynn; I love you all,” Shriever said in recognition of her family who continued to watch.

“Another gold medal – I can’t believe it!”
