CEO Shawa says he aspired private before turning to Rogers

If approved by Canadian regulators, the Rogers-Shaw merger would be the largest telecommunications business in Canada in two decades and the second largest ever, according to Bloomberg data, after the spin-off of BCE Inc. from Nortel Networks Corp. in 2000. A group of pension and private investment funds tried to buy BCE in 2007 using leverage, but the deal failed when the financial crisis hit.
