This June was the warmest in American history. Power cables melted from 116 degrees in Portland, Oregon broke previous temperature records. Seattle recorded the highest level of 108 degrees, as well as the Canadian province of British Columbia, at an incredible 121 degrees.
As the world warms, more and more people are installing air conditioning. Global demand for cooling energy has more than tripled since 1990 and could more than double from now until 2040 without stricter efficiency standards.
But air conditioning itself is the main thing contributes to global warming. Overall, construction operations involving heating, cooling and lighting account for 28% of the world’s total greenhouse gas emissions. That is more than the entire global transport sector.
But SkyCool, Gradient and a number of other companies are working on the problem. They try to apply new technologies to the traditionally inflexible heating and cooling industry, finance start-up costs, transfer value to property owners and ensure that all this is done in a fair way.
