The Golden Cup is a regional championship that crowns the best national team of North America, Central America and the Caribbean (CONCACAF). The tournament is held every two years, and Mexico is the defending champion.
The 2021 edition is being held in the US with 16 participating countries, including a special guest team and reigning Asian champions Qatar. 16 teams were divided into four groups; the top two in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. The knockout matches will be played until the finals on August 1.
The preliminary round was held from July 2 to 6, from which Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti and Guadeloupe passed to the group stage. Curacao was forced to retire the day before the tournament after the outbreak of positive COVID-19 tests. Guatemala, the best ranked team eliminated in the preliminary round, took its place.

2021 Gold Cup: Tournament format
The Golden Cup tournament takes place in a similar way as other continental tournaments around the world, in a group stage followed by knockout rounds:
Group phase: 16 national teams were divided into four groups. Each team will play three matches within the competition. The top two in each group will advance to the quarterfinals.
Knockout round: Eight teams advancing from the group stage are matched in pre-determined quarterfinal matches based on group endings. A fixed carrier of quarterfinal and semifinal games with one elimination will leave the two teams to advance to the finals on Sunday, August 1, in Las Vegas.
