Concor begins a volume-based rebate for rail freight to change the position of empty boxes

The state container corporation India Ltd (Concor) has introduced a discount on rail freight for repositioning empty containers in order to ensure the availability of containers for export.

Concor said the existing scheme for repositioning empty containers from various ports to entry terminals with a 50 percent discount on rail freight would continue until March 31 next year.

The scheme has now been extended to reposition empty containers from various Concor port freight stations (CFS) to other inland container warehouses (ICD), also for export purposes, the company’s trade notice said.

Shipping lines offering more than 15,000 units of equivalent twenty feet (TEU) of empty containers per month under the scheme will receive a 100 percent discount on rail freight.

Lines offering more than 10,000 TEUs and up to 15,000 TEUs of empty containers per month will be given a 75 percent discount on rail freight.

Concor said the goal of the scheme is to ensure sufficient availability of empty containers for trade to meet their export obligations, increase exports and reduce logistics costs.

The new scheme took effect on September 1 and will remain in effect until March 31 next year, the notice said.

Indian exporters have been hit by a severe shortage of empty export containers due to disruptions in the global supply chain.
