A very small number of players in the NFL can touch the ball just a few times and have an impact on the game Patterson is doing. His elite athleticism and speed of interruption make him a player who intimidates the defense, but the lack of a refined route usually forces offensive coordinators to use him as bait that allows other teammates easier coverage. Aside from his rookie season, in any of the last five years he has still not crossed 501 yards since the battle. The Vikings chose not to choose the five-year option under Patterson’s contract, so he will become a free agent after his 2016 campaign. By adding Laquon Treadwell in the first round, Patterson’s role as a receiver is once again severely limited, but his athletic abilities can occasionally be used as a weapon to attack a team – not just for special teams – if he improves in training camp.
After Patterson caught 45 passes for 469 yards and four TDs during his 2013 start-up campaign, expectations regarding his production were rosy on the eve of last season, but instead experienced a setback on that front. Of course, it is unclear who will throw the ball to him. Matt Cassel was the best striker on the team last year, but the Vikings swapped for Teddy Bridgewater’s 32-pick draft, and it’s only a matter of time before he takes over. While Bridgewater certainly has a higher long-term ceiling, Patterson will likely have to adjust to a novice quarterback either at training camp or throughout the year. But the addition of offensive coordinator Norv Turner (the architect who broke through Josh Gordon in Cleveland last year while playing with three substandard quarterbacks) should help. Although Jennings will be the first player of the team, Patterson has a great opportunity to end the camp as a starter.
