Affected by a highly contagious variant of the Delta, the Southeast Asian country reported a record 54,517 cases on Wednesday, almost ten times more than in early June.
“I definitely feel scared (because of the infection) … But this is for humanity and I do it from the heart,” Sunaryo said.
Dressed in protective gear, the 51-year-old – who uses one name – volunteered for two years at the Human Initiative, an Indonesian-based charity in the capital Jakarta.
“My job is to pick up patients with Covid-19 who will isolate the hospital and also bring them home,” he said.
Working together with government ambulances, volunteers play a vital role in supporting the squeaky public health service of Java, the most densely populated island of Indonesia.
“The government can’t cope with the jump in the Covid-19 case that happened here on the island of Java and mostly in Jakarta,” said Sobari, who coordinates volunteer ambulance drivers.
The team can receive up to 80 calls a day from patients who desperately want to come to the hospital, even though it only has the resources to help 30, he said.
“The support of people and volunteers like us is also mandatory and we can end the pandemic faster,” Sobari added.
