X-Press Pearl, a container ship under the flag of Singapore, reported a fire on the ship on May 20 near the port of Colombo. The fire burned for more than a week, while efforts to move the ship into deeper waters failed. The ship contained dangerous chemicals such as nitric acid, sodium methoxide and methanol. There were also billions of lens-sized plastic pellets on the ship, known as shingles, which spilled into the water and buried nearby beaches as the ship sank.
