Cup of Jo has been running for 14 years (!), So we decided to occasionally highlight some of the most popular posts from the past. Here is one of our favorites, originally released on November 20, 2018.
Alex and I recently celebrated our wedding anniversary, and my big question of the night was …
Should I wear heels? Alex has 5’8 ″ and I have 5’6 ″, so when I wear heels, I’m a little taller. As seen in sitcoms, movies, and reality television, there is generally a social expectation that women should be shorter than their partners, and that was instilled in me as I stood behind my closet and discussed footwear. But then my second question was: WHO CARES?
My friend Emma from Books are a magical glory, is centimeter higher than her husband. Sometimes I call Mike my short pile of pancakes, ”she told me. “I really don’t think about it anymore. My last boyfriend was even shorter! I guess I always consider some kind of goddess tall and voluptuous, and who would mind feeling like a goddess? Not me.”
Jana and Colin, who have been married for nearly eight years, are two inches tall (she’s 5’10 ”on his 5’8 ″).” When we first had fun, he asked, ‘Is it okay that I’m not taller from you?’ Of course, it didn’t matter. He was the person I wanted to spend time with. He is so confident, fun and stupid. ”
The only thing that was strange to them was for a moment at their wedding. “We had a great photographer, but she posed for couples and I remember some of them feeling uncomfortable. She kept wanting me to put my head on his shoulder, and I felt like my head was bending very far away and it seemed really weird to me. “
Caroline is three inches taller than her girlfriend Leah. “I don’t really notice the difference,” she says, “but I also hold on when I’m standing next to her (for example, leaning on one side) to be level with her. The only thing that comes to formal events. Now I’m thinking about apartments because it’s so much easier to dance together. ”
Brooke Williams is five inches taller than her husband Josh. “I never thought I’d marry someone shorter than myself, even at 5’11,” I’m not sure why that possibility ever occurred to me, “she told me.” But then I met Josh and all considerations of relative height flew out “I don’t think it bothered me or that I even thought about it. Although occasionally when I see it in the mirror I am amazed at how much I lean over it. Besides, my hair doesn’t help!”
Franny and her girlfriend Kerry, are exactly the same height. “We are actually the same size in everything – up to the size of a bra! This comes in handy when packing for travel, as the suitcase can be shared. I still wear heels more than she does. It’s fun to play a ‘tall person’ every now and then, and leaning her head on my shoulder is strangely romantic. “
Who knows, maybe cultural norms are giving way? I recently watched old episodes of New Girl (because Nick), and the character of Ceca started dating a shorter guy. And I liked that the show didn’t mention their height difference in general. It was a complete release.
Of course, there are also some well-known real-life examples. Obama is neck and neck – Barack is 6’1 ″, and Michelle is 5’11 ”. When she’s in heels, she’s taller. And she is PERFECT.
Pharrell Williams is two inches shorter than his wife Helen Lasichanh by 5’11 ”.
At 5’5 ″, Tina Fey and her husband Jeff Richmond are the same height, but she is taller in heels …
And Portia de Rossi and Ellen DeGeneres!
What about you? Do you care about height when going out? Does it feel complicated? What experiences did you have? I would love to hear …
