Israeli Ministry of Defense, Directorate of Defense, Research and Development (DDRD), together with the Army and the ID Defense Electronic Company Elbit Systems Ltd. (Nasdaq: ESLT; LEVEL: ESLT) today introduced precision mortar ammunition, laser and GPS guided by Iron Sting. The 120mm mortar recently passed the last tests at a test site in southern Israel. Completion of the test allows serial production to begin before the system is delivered to the IDF.
Iron Sting is a network precision fire system that uses laser and GPS to accurately target and prevent collateral damage.
A series of tests were performed using two networked cardamom mortar systems developed by Elbit Systems: a “cardamom” system, mounted on the M113 APC, and a “cardamom spear” system mounted on the Hummer 4X4 SUV. Iron Sting is designed to accurately shoot at targets, both in open terrain and in urban areas, while reducing the possibility of collateral damage and preventing injuries to non-combatants. Its operational use, says the Israeli Ministry of Defense, will transform the ground war and equip the battalions with organic, accurate and efficient firepower.
Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz said: “The technology made available by the Israeli industry to the IDF is changing the battlefield and providing our forces with more precise and efficient means. The integration of the Iron Age into IDF is in line with the vision presented in Tnuf’s military multi-year plan.” It also meets the needs of the IDF, adapting combat capabilities to fight enemies hidden in a civilian, urban environment, while meeting the legal and moral standards set by the State of Israel. “
DDR & D, Chief R&D Brig. General Yaniv Rotem said, “Ten years of research and development have brought us to this point where we can provide IDF ground forces with advanced capabilities created for a modern battlefield. This laser and GPS-guided mortar ammunition provides the precise firepower that has so far been achieved. implemented only in missiles and air ammunition. This is a very complex program and a revolutionary system at the international level. “
The Chief of the IDF Armaments Department, Colonel Arik Avivi, said: “The Army Command is leading the process of integrating ‘Iron Beach’ into the IDF. This precision-guided mortar is a milestone for IDF battalions, equipping them with precise and organic firepower. This capability has so far been reserved for large and complex missiles. Thanks to this impressive technological development, it will now be widely used in mortar ammunition. “
Elbit Systems Land Division CEO Yehuda Vered said: “The introduction of laser and GPS-guided ammunition is transforming the mortar system from a statistical firepower into a precision fire system, bringing a significant change in firepower at the tactical level. We believe we have developed an effective solution which allows for increased accuracy and reduced collateral damage. “
