The English countdown to the euro continued with a narrow win over Austria at The Riverside Stadium – but suffered an injury as Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold limped late.
Manager Gareth Southgate saw his experimental sure victory on the side when Arsenal teenager Bukayo Saka crowned the corner end for his first international goal in the 56th minute with a fine move.
Southgate, who on Tuesday named their 26-man squad for the Euro, chose an unknown-looking side because the players involved in Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City in the Europa League and Champions League final were not selected, so they will be happy to come out with victory – but it was not a convincing display.
England survived the fears when Everton defender Ben Godfrey, debuting as a substitute, sent keeper Jordan Pickford to fight to grab an unsafe back post, while the keeper touched Marcel Sabitzer’s shot into the crossbar.
And as Alexander-Arnold walked cautiously across the field with English medical staff, debutant Ben White removed the line from Alessandro Schopf after Pickford’s shot fell on him in the area.
The three lions on Sunday round off their preparations for Euro 2020 with a friendly match against Romania (17:00 BST) before the opening of the tournament against Croatia on Sunday, June 13 (14:00 BST).
