A strange cold storm that hit the central U.S. triggered major blackouts as ice formed on wind turbines and some pipelines froze, forcing oil and gas wells to close. As electricity suppliers and traders struggled to find fuel to meet their obligations, prices rose sharply. The attack affected companies that found themselves on the right side of the store, but their ability to collect depends on what happens to gas suppliers, electricity producers and utility customers, some of whom have applied price extraction lawsuits.
