Sarah and Kokebnesh they have been in a relationship for five years. One day, on the beach, Koki fell to one knee. Here is their beautiful story …
When did you start planning?
Koki: I first started looking at the rings. The good thing is that Sara likes to look at suggestions and rings, so I took mental notes. Finally, I ordered one. I sent it to a friend instead of to our address. I deleted all my internet history. I had this double life!
What was your proposal plan?
Koki: I wanted Sarah to feel like a princess. I realized that the way to tease her a little was to photograph her. Photographers often ask to photograph us for their portfolios and social networks. So I asked one of our favorite photographers in Hamburg to pretend to ask us to take photos. We decided to meet on the beach.
What happened when you came to the beach?
Koki: The photographer started taking casual photos. I told her to give me a sign when she felt that the lighting was right and that the moment was good. She wanted to tell me to take an analog camera so we could use it during filming. That was the signal.
Sarah: So Koki went to get the camera. She also had something small in her hand. I was like, is that a camera lens? And then she fell to one knee. And I was like, O MY GOSH !!!
How did that moment feel ?!
Koki: When I got on one knee, I said, ‘Sarah,’ and suddenly all the emotions came up. My voice trembled – ‘You are my home, I love you’ – and I just sobbed.
Sarah: It was an out-of-body experience. My emotions changed every second. First I was surprised, then so happy, then emotional, then shocked again, and I was like, Okay, okay, try to listen to her.
Koki: It all happened so fast, and at the same time time stood still.
Sarah, when did you see the ring?
Sarah: At first I just looked at her face. And then we kissed and she said, “Ring!”
Koki: We just screamed and hugged.
Sarah: I looked at it and he told me, my God, it’s perfect.
After that, when you told friends and family, were there any funny reactions?
Koki: Sarah’s parents were lovely. They are typically Germans – more reserved, really kind and full of love, but not so expressive. Mom had tears in her eyes. And her dad had this smile on his face the whole time, like a big cat grinning.
What about your parents, Koki?
Koki: Unfortunately, it was kind of weird. It is unfortunate that my family supported me when I first came out; and Sarah seemed to be greeted with open arms. Five years later, we live together, we have our own apartment, we have a dog, and it seemed like all of a sudden, like, shit, is this really serious? I was excited to tell them about the engagement, but their reactions were neither happy nor hopeful. I felt so disconnected at that moment.
That’s hard, I’m really sorry.
Koki: My dad seems to look at our lives as a burden, like, Oh, it must be so hard. I was like, but don’t you see the life we have and how we have each other? Nothing about this is a burden. There are definitely things that are wrong for the queer community and we have to fight and be loud, but most of the time it’s just falling in love with a person, so why couldn’t that be the most important thing?
What do you say to your friends?
Koki: You could feel their love. My cousin in London went crazy. When we called her, she was in the mall eating a hamburger and she said, ‘WHAT !!!!! NO !!!!! WHAT THE HELL !!!!!! ‘
Finally, I would like to ask you: what do you love about each other?
Koki: Sarah is one of the funniest people I know. And she will get the best out of you. She knows your potential even if you don’t know it; if I struggle to believe in myself, she lifts me up. She is always behind me and would do anything to protect me. I feel really safe with her.
Sarah: Koki is so kind, she is the most beautiful person you will ever meet. She has this big heart and makes everyone feel welcome. She doesn’t even have to try, it seems natural to her. Everyone loves her.
Congratulations this wonderful couple!! If you are married, how did you get engaged? Was there any suggestion or did you just talk about it??
(During our phone interview, we smiled and laughed the whole time – here are two screenshots!)
PS More sweet suggestions, i 11 wedding things to do and what not to do.
