India’s fight against coronavirus is shifting to its villages, where health care is hard to find

At the heart of this crisis in the hinterland is the state of Uttar Pradesh – home to 230 million people, more than the population of Brazil. It is also one of the poorest and least developed countries. Local elections were held in villages across the country in April, officials say led to an increase in rural areas. According to the teachers’ organization, more than 700 government teachers who were deployed to the polls died after the election, many after a positive test for coronavirus. Earlier this month, the state recorded just over 2,500 cases. By the end of the month, as the election ended, cases had risen to nearly 35,000.
