How does the measurable Kenny Golladay compare to other wide receivers?

This section compares his draft training metrics with players in the same position. The line represents the percentile rank of the player. For example, if the bar is halfway, the player falls into the 50th percentile for that metric and that would be considered average.

Year 2 is when the main receivers traditionally break out, and Golladay was no exception. He emerged as the Lions ’best pass catcher, averaging 8.9 YPT (12th) and 15.2 YPC (4th) on his way to breaking the 1,000-meter mark in 15 games. With 6-4, 213, 4.5 and 40 speeds, Golladay is the prototype NFL receiver no. 1, capable of a big game (eight catches of 40 yards above his first 167 goals in the league) and operated zone traffic. For some reason, the Lions didn’t use Golladay too closely from close range (only 14 of his 119 targets came within 20 and five inside 10). That could change in 2019, as Golladay is more established as the team’s best dog. Matthew Stafford’s approach last year was not particularly successful, and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter was replaced by more conservative Darrell Bevell. If history is any indication, Bevell will likely want to run more, but that could also result in a less varied foul in passing that benefits Golladay. Marvin Jones has also combined, while Detroit signed 33-year-old Danny Amendola this off-season, to form a slot and pick TJ Hockenson by eighth overall pick. Golladay himself suffered a chest injury that cost him games in week 17, but he is expected to be ready for training camp.

Golladay missed five games with a tendon injury during the rookie season, but when he was on the field he made a shot, starting with his first game of his career when he caught two touchdowns. Overall, he averaged 17.0 YPC and 9.9 YPT on 48 targets and scored three times. At 6-4, 213 and with 4.5 40 speeds, it is profiled as prototype no. 1 receiver, capable of a big catch on the field – in fact, Golladay had an incredible five catches of 40 plus (T-8th) despite having several targets – and that in the red zone. In other words, Golladay had another catch of 40 plus from each of AJ Green, Julio Jones and Keenan Allen, while seeing about one-third of his targets. It’s often the 2nd year when receivers break in, and Golladay would be an ideal candidate, but for the presence of his two target teammates Marvin Jones and Golden Tate, they both come from strong seasons. Golladay will pose a deep threat to say the least and there is likely to be an increase in work in the red zones when TE Eric Ebron disappears. But his ceiling is probably limited, unless Jones or Tate get hurt.

Golladay, the third pick this year, has surpassed 1,000 yards in both of his last two seasons in Northern Illinois and pulled 18 touchpoints in the same range. With its 6-4, 218 pounds, Golladay’s size sets it apart from other Lions receivers, as it is the second tallest in the group Marvin Jones, who entered 6-2 but weighs just 198 pounds and then is 6-1 Ryan Spadola’s wide reserve. Without last year’s team leader at touch receptions, Anquan Boldin, the Lions must find help in the red zone, paving the way for Golladay to contribute immediately. Novak is competing with TJ Jones to replace Boldin as the third receiver.
