Services in Australia need to take the safety of their staff and community seriously. This is not our first lock; it is indefensible that the agency does not have a clear contingency plan for local epidemics. It allows local managers to intentionally and dangerously ignore lock commands.
There are currently dozens of websites and around 10,000 workers from Australia, working on prison services, the flow of effect that this goes wrong can be devastating, not only for workers but also for their communities.
We have websites that tell workers they don’t even bother to look for work from home, in the middle of locking up where health advice is working from home. Workers feel that the work they do is essential, but when they can do it from home, they should work from home. That’s not good enough, and Services Australia needs to explain why they think they’re above state and state health councils.
