He resigned as a member of the primary membership of the All India Trinamool Congress on December 19, 2020. Adhikari submitted his nomination papers for the elections to the Legislative Assembly of West Bengal on March 13, 2021. After joining the BJP, Adhikari promised to defeat Banerjee in the Western elections. Bengal in 2021 by at least 50,000 votes. In response, the chief minister called Adhikari a “traitor”.

The battle for the position of Nandigram was one of the most closely watched during this election season, because the current chief minister against the former minister in the government from her administration went to the place that belonged to the latter in 2016.
