As we enter June, we look forward to the upcoming summer season with a sense of renewed optimism. One of the highlights here on Nantucket will be Nantucket Historical Associationis the sixth year Nantucket of design event, held from August 5 to 7. Before the event begins, I am pleased to be working with the NHA to produce several videos that highlight the fusion of Nantucket’s strong history with the power of excellent design. I’m excited to share our first Spotlight, which features one of Nantucket’s most famous craft culture icons. Please join me with the host, Mary Lacoursiere, director of education for the NHA, and several masters from the island as we explore the history, tradition and styles of Nantucket light boat baskets, including a special peek at Nantucket Lightship Shopping Cart Museum an exhibition, celebrating their new NHA association, at the Hadwen House.
As interest in crafts, weaving baskets and all things rattan continues to grow, it’s a good time to take a look at the heritage of Nantucket Lightship Baskets again. With a fascinating history and wide global impact, I hope you enjoyed learning more about this most significant Nantucket treasure.
In the coming months, I will share more about this year’s NBD event. As our chair Kelly Williams explains, “Our theme this year is Renovation and we look forward to amazing discussions on how design can restore not only a home but also the spirit, as well as how to restore our precious ancient homes in a thoughtful way for modern life. “We’re excited to move to a hybrid, personal and virtual format, starting with our signature Keynote Design Luncheon which includes a designer Nate Berkus, who will join us on the island! You can learn more about this important fundraiser and buy tickets both for in person (lunch is always on sale) and for virtual events at Nantucket by Design site. Follow us!
