See where Raheem Mostert lined up on the field and how he performed in each place.
The Backfield 49ers had a lot of mouths to eat last year, but Mostert announced early on that he wouldn’t get lost in the turnaround. The 151-yard eruption in Week 2 made the darling give up, and although he had ups and downs after that, by the end of the season he had moved to the top of the depth chart in a foul by friendly RB Kyle Shanahan. Mostert found the end zone at least once in every game, 12th to 17th week, amassing 515 yards and eight overall results in those six games, before the Packers sent home an NFC championship game with 220 yards and four touchdowns. Not bad for a guy who was a typist as a special teams player and went through five organizations in his first three NFL seasons after disappearing from Purdue. Mostert’s best advantage is his electric speed on the open field – he runs 4.34 40 – and no goalkeeper in the league has turned a higher percentage of his wear into a profit of at least 15 yards. He even blinked a little strength when needed, taking 18th place among 46 qualified defenders in a broken rhythm and 23rd on the average yard after contact (2.2). Mostert said he has increased this season by expecting a higher workload this year, although Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon remain on the roster, while Matt Breida was replaced by Miami in April. Shanahan’s long-standing penchant for multi-player backs makes Mostert’s role of a bell tie amazing, but even a modest increase in volume to 200 wears could make a big impact in an effective offense.
Mostert was awarded a three-year contract this season after producing 261 racing yards in his career on just 34 carriers (7.7 YPC), with excellent work as a gunner in special teams. The 27-year-old will find himself buried on a depth map for the start of the year due to the addition of Tevin Coleman, but his place on the list should be secure based on the work of special teams. In the event that some combination of Coleman, Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida falls on injury, Mostert would have an advantage in a bigger role based on his brief outbreak in 2018.
The back-running journeyman entered the list of 53 San Francisco members last season, mostly contributing to special teams (just six runs in 11 games). A knee injury at the end of the season Jericho McKinnon creates a bit of opening, but the Niners seem ready to move forward and Alfred Morris and Matt Breida share the job. Mostert will probably make most of his recordings in special teams.
Already a midfielder running backwards (five teams in two seasons), Mostert entered the camp as a long shot to make a list of 53 men, but an impressive performance in the preseason allowed him to survive a day of reduction. He mainly plans to give his contribution in special teams, although the role in the attack is not entirely out of the question.
Entering his second NFL season, Mostert seems to have turned his head during Cleveland’s off-season program and is reportedly firmly in the mix to compete for a Browns no. 4, if not against Glenn Winston for No. 3 Thanks to his speed, Mostert could also secure a role in launching special teams. In the end, Mostert seems poised to earn a spot on the Browns ’regular season schedule and is likely to make his biggest impact with kickbacks.
Mostert disappeared in May. He will take a look during training camp, but will have to skip a colleague who is running backwards Kenjon Barner for a shot on the 53-man roster. Even then, he will hardly see the field.
