Tiger Woods suffered multiple leg injuries and underwent surgery Tuesday after being involved in a car accident and a rollover near Los Angeles.
Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Christopher Thomas told USA TODAY Sports that the fire department arrived at the scene just before 7:30 p.m. The first response removed the vehicle’s windshield and pulled out the only passenger in the vehicle – Woods – who was then transported to a local hospital.
“He’s in surgery right now and we thank you for your privacy and support,” Woods longtime agent Mark Steinberg told Golfweek.
Woods, the 15th major winner, is one of the most decorated golfers of all time (82 career wins). His last big win, at The Masters in 2019, was his first in 10 years.
Here is the latest information regarding the accident and Woods condition.
Details of a Tiger Woods car accident
The LA County Sheriff answered call 911 for a rollover accident at 7:12 a.m. on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes. The vehicle was traveling north on Hawthorne Boulevard and suffered extensive damage.
Woods was the driver and the only passenger in the vehicle.
A video of the crash site showed a destroyed SUV, a destroyed front end and activated airbags.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the accident happened on “a winding, steep stretch of Hawthorne Boulevard, the main road that runs through the Palos Verdes Peninsula.” Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva told reporters that there are frequent accidents in the area due to the slope and curvature of the road.

Villanueva said the vehicle made contact with the sign in the center center and crossed into the oncoming lane south before hitting a curb, a tree and overturning several times before stopping about 50 feet from the house.
House tenants alerted authorities, and the sheriff responded at 7:18 p.m. Los Angeles County firefighters were on the scene 10 minutes later, Fire Chief Daryl Osby said.
Villanueva said that at this moment, there is no reason to believe that damage or weather conditions are factors in the accident. He said Woods was wearing a seat belt and added that an investigation into the crash could take days or even weeks.
Tiger Woods injuries
The extent of Woods’ injuries is not fully known, but Steinberg said the golfer suffered “multiple leg injuries.” Injuries are not considered life-threatening.
Deputy Police Officer Carlos Gonzalez told reporters that due to the nature of the accident and the fact that Woods was pulled out of the vehicle, he met the criteria for being taken to the nearest trauma center, UCLA Harbor Hospital.
Gonzalez said Woods could not stand and was removed from the vehicle on a board. He was conscious and able to speak, acting “calm and lucid,” Gonzalez said.
Woods answered “Tiger” when asked for his name, and Gonzalez recognized him immediately, he said. Gonzalez was carrying his body camera when he found Woods.
Osby said he was reported to have Woods had serious injuries to both legs.
A statement via Woods’ Twitter account was posted late Tuesday night: “We thank everyone for their tremendous support and messages during this difficult time. As previously reported, Tiger was involved in a single car accident in California early this morning. Underwent a long operation on the lower. right leg and ankle after being brought to the hospital.
“He’s awake right now, reacting and recovering in his hospital room. Thank you to the wonderful doctors and hospital staff at UCLA Harbor Medical Center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff and the Fire Department. Your support and help has been extraordinary.”
Tiger Woods hosted Genesis Invitational in California
Woods makes his home in Jupiter, Florida, but was in Southern California over the weekend at the Genesis Open, a tournament held by his foundation at the Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles. Winner Max Homi was handed the trophy after the final round.
Actor David Spade and retired NBA legend Dwyane Wade posted on social media that they played golf with Woods on Monday.
Tiger Woods had back surgery in December
Shortly after playing with his son Charlie at the PNC Championships, Woods underwent back surgery in December – a microdiscectomy procedure to remove a fragment of the disc under pressure – which made it impossible for him to play this season. He told JBS JBS for the final round on Sunday, “I feel good. I’m a little stiff. I’ve scheduled another MRI … and then I can start doing more activities.”

What type of car did Tiger Woods drive?
The photos and footage of the SUV driven by Woods show the “Genesis Invitational” logo on the side of the vehicle. A A Genesis spokesman said Woods drove the GV80, the only SUV under Genesis – a luxury brand sold by Hyundai.
