Mount Nyiragongo released lava that destroyed homes on the outskirts of Goma, but witnesses said Sunday that the 2 million-strong city was largely spared after the volcano erupted at night and sent thousands of people into panic. Authorities said at least five people were killed in the crash while trying to leave Goma, but warned it was too early for deaths in the hardest-hit communities. According to Konstant Ndima, the military governor of the affected region, more than 500 homes were destroyed. .
