Pope Francis visited Iraqi regions once held by the Islamic State

Commenting on the historic region of Mesopotamia, which covered much of modern Iraq, including Mosul, Pope Francis said: “How cruel that this country, the cradle of civilization, should have been hit by such a barbaric blow, destroyed with ancient places of worship, and thousands of people – Muslims, Christians, Yazidis and others – forcibly displaced or killed.
