Reliance Industries Ltd. announced that the long-awaited launch of JioPhone Next, which was developed in conjunction with Google, will be delayed at least for November due to a global shortage of chipsets.
“Both companies have started testing the JioPhone Next with a limited number of users for further training and are actively working to make it available in time for the holiday season in Diwali,” RIL’s Jio Platform press release said. “This extra time will also help alleviate the current global semiconductor shortage across the industry.”
The affordable smartphone was supposed to be launched on September 10th.
The statement said Jio and Google have made significant progress in introducing the smartphone, which is now in advanced testing with a limited set of users for further refinement.
JioPhone Next will have a custom operating system based on the Android OS. The phone will have a suite of Google applications including features such as voice assistant, automatic text reading on the screen, language translation and a smart camera with an augmented reality filter. It will also have a smart camera with India-oriented filters, the company said.
The price and delivery details of the phone have not yet been announced. However, Mukesh Ambani said it would be the most affordable smartphone in the world.
Research firm UBS said in a May report that migrating 2G or smartphone users to a smartphone would expand average revenue per Reliance Jio user and accelerate market share growth.
