Sri Lanka’s spinners bowled tourists to 43 wins over the West Indies in Twenty20’s second international competition on Friday, leveling a three-match series at 1-1.

Defending a moderate 160-6, Wanindudu Hasaranga, Lakshan Sandakan, Akila Dananjaya and Danushka Gunathilaka took eight goalkeepers, bowling the West Indies for 117 in 18.4 games.

Sri Lanka matched their lineup with four spinners for the obligatory match at Coolidge, and the tactics paid off on slow ground making it difficult to hit hard. The West Indies failed to maintain any momentum because tickets were falling improperly.

Dananjaya, who went down in history twice in the first match of the series by taking a hat-trick and receiving six sixes in one, set the tone for the West Indian inning when he pulled his four cars in a row in the power book, taking 1-13.

Sandakan’s left wrist spinner, who missed the first match of the series, took 3-14 out of 3.4 takeovers, including a vital pass from West India captain Kieron Pollard for 13. It was Pollard who won a place in history two days ago by becoming only third a cricket player who scored six sixes in more in an international match, hitting 38 with 11 balls.

He restrained himself on Friday, entering 7th place, but he also had a hard time coping with the pitch, managing to score just 13 of 15 balls with just six. Sandakan removed it with a wider delivery that Pollard seemed to pick up over the blanket, but which took a thick edge and flew to the broom for the blanket.

Hasaranga was declared the man of the match for his 3-17 from four overs and 19 undefeated in Sri Lanka’s inning. He hit a hitter from the West Indies with a variety of wrist, line and flight turns, firing Lendl Simmons (21), Chris Gayle (16) and Fabian Allen (12). Its googly, hard to choose, explained Simmons and Allen, who have lost weight.

“The wicket was slow and I tried to bow without giving too many limits and keeping a good line and length,” Hasaranga said. “Akila (Dananjaya) is a ball with a new ball and I always ball after a game of strength, so I have to concentrate on the line and the length. I prefer to play that role.”

Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews made a good decision when he picked the bat after winning the throw. Openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Pathum Nassinka gave the tourists a strong start, setting 95 for the first trophy in the best partnership of the match.

Nissanka was left without 37 in the 11th round, and Gunathilaka continued his half-century with 35 balls, before falling in the same score with a total of 96-2.

The rest of the strikers from Sri Lanka struggled with the best efforts that followed from Ashen Bandara who made 21 of 19 balls and Hasarange of whom 19 came from 11 deliveries.

Dananjaya kept the batters from the West Indies early: the home team struggled to 25-1 after five goals. Hasaranga then removed Simmons and Gayle in the same team during the seventh lineup of the two most dangerous players of the West Indies.

Pollard’s threat hung over the match until late, and Sri Lanka rejoiced when he fell relatively cheaply.

Lunch McCoy hit 23 with just seven balls hitting no. 10, too late to change the outcome of the match.

The decisive match of the T20 series is on Sunday. The teams will also play three one-day matches followed by two Test matches.
