Hospitalized wife of assassinated Haitian president Jovenel Moïse makes first public statement since being wounded in attack
PORT-AU-PRINCE – The hospitalized wife of assassinated Haitian President Jovenel Moïse made her first public statement after being wounded in the attack that killed him, accusing enemies of wanting to “kill his dream, vision and ideology”.
Martine Moïse issued a recorded statement in Creole from a Miami hospital where she was being treated for wounds sustained in the attack early Wednesday, and also released a version of her Twitter bill Saturday.
“I’m alive, thank God,” she said on the recording, which was also played on local radio stations. “But I love my husband Jovenela. We fought together for more than 25 years. All these years love has radiated in the house. But suddenly the mercenaries came and pelted my husband with bullets. “
“You have to be a notorious criminal without a loop to assassinate a president like Jovenel Moïse with impunity, without giving him a chance to speak,” she added. “You knew when the president was fighting.
“These people hired mercenaries to kill the president and his family for road projects, electricity, drinking water supply, organizing referendums and of choices …
“The mercenaries who killed the president are currently behind bars,” she added, “but other mercenaries currently want to kill his dream, his vision and his ideology.”
Police say they have arrested more than a dozen people – most of whom are retired Colombian soldiers – and are looking for more, but it remains unclear who hired the team that attacked the president’s house or why.
