Some major cities faced similar problems due to violent crime last summer as this year. In 2020, nearly 90 people were killed in Chicago over the weekend on Independence Day, and 17 died.

Similarly in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp activated National Guard troops after a series of shootings and protests in Atlanta. Five people died, including an eight-year-old girl, and at least 30 people were injured during a long holiday weekend last year.
