More than 180 people were killed in shootings across the country during the holiday weekend of July 4, according to data collected in the Archives for Weapons Violence and reviewed by the NPR.
Until 11.30 pm on July 5, reported the Arms Violence Archive The shooting lasted 18 hours, starting on July 2, killing 189 people and wounding 516. In total, there were more than 540 shootings during the holiday weekend, the organization reported.
These numbers may increase as the organization continues to collect statistics from the weekend.
News of the big shootings in Chicago, Texas, Virginia and Ohio comes as many of the state’s largest cities are struggling to sustain a steady rise in violent crimes. Officials from across the country spoke earlier this year of serious fears of a bloody summer.
Albany, NY, Mayor Kathy M. Sheehan said Washington Post in May that there was an increase in gun violence in her town. At the time, she said, “I’m really worried,” of the upcoming summer months.
Some major cities faced similar problems due to violent crime last summer as this year. In 2020, nearly 90 people were killed in Chicago over the weekend on Independence Day, and 17 died.
Similarly in Georgia, Governor Brian Kemp activated National Guard troops after a series of shootings and protests in Atlanta. Five people died, including an eight-year-old girl, and at least 30 people were injured during a long holiday weekend last year.
Dozens were shot in Chicago, including police

Chicago Tribune reports at least 95 people were shot dead in the city over the long weekend.
Among those injured were two police officers from the Chicago Police Department. The two were shot and received non-life-threatening injuries when they tried to break up the crowd after the July 4 rally.
The shooting happened around 1:45 a.m. on the city’s west side,, according to the Associated Press. It came less than an hour after a separate shooting in Washington Park on the south side of the city killed two people and wounded four.
A police statement said they reacted to several large groups in the city, resulting in multiple arrests.
“There was a lot of crowd gathering tonight, a lot of holiday fireworks, kind of spontaneous,” Police Supervisor David Brown said during a news conference. “They dispersed the crowd when they heard gunshots and felt pain.”
In addition to the officer; a A 6-year-old girl and her mother were killed. Chicago Tribune also reports that at least 16 people died from injuries sustained in the shooting, which lasted from about 5pm on Friday to 8pm on Monday.
Brown said on Twitter to this year at least 33 police officers in the city were shot or shot in the line of duty.
Brown also shared online that the Chicago Police Department has recovered over 6,100 rifles over the weekend – 26% more than the same period last year.

Children injured in shootings in Virginia and Ohio
Norfolk Police they charged the 15-year-old boy during the weekend shooting at four children between the ages of 6 and 16 on July 2nd.
A six-year-old girl sustained life-threatening injuries but has been considered in stable condition since Saturday, police said. All fourteen-year-olds and two sixteen-year-olds received non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
The teenage suspect is charged with malicious wounding, attempted malicious wounding, shooting into a occupied building, possession of a minor weapon and two counts of firearms use.
A 17-year-old boy was killed in Ohio after a shooting was disrupted early Monday by a block party in Toledo, police said. At least 12 people were injured in the shooting.
Toledo Police Chief George Kral he told a news conference Monday that officers at 12:24 a.m. received a call for a man who shot into the air and 300 people fighting in a street in the Lawrence Avenue area near Wall Street in the city.
The king said one victim was 18, while the other victims of the shooting were minors: two are 17 years old, two are 16 years old, one is 15 years old and the other is 11 years old.
Two people – a 51-year-old and a 19-year-old – are still in critical condition, according to WTOL11.
“We should be angry,” King said. “We have to come together as a community. We see this kind of violence in this country all year round, and now it has hit home.”
8 were shot after an altercation in Fort Worth

At least eight people were shot and injured after a brawl broke out on July 4 in Fort Worth, Texas. Police reported finding several victims near a car wash. All were transported to nearby hospitals and are reportedly in stable condition.
According to police, the shooting began after one man left the group during a fight, returned to the scene with a gun and started shooting at the group. Others then began to return fire. Police said most of the victims were simply bystanders caught in crossfire.
The same day in Texas, five people they were found shot in Dallas. Three victims were later pronounced dead. Dallas police said there are currently no suspects identified or arrested.
