Thermal forces change in the tennis schedule

The start time of the Olympic tennis event will be moved by four hours from 11:00 to 15:00 from Thursday after a number of players battled heat and humidity in Tokyo on Wednesday.

“The decision to start the matches on Thursday at 3 pm JST is possible due to the outcome of today’s matches in five competitions that are held and the size of the playground, and it is designed to further protect the health of players,” the ITF said in a statement.

The decision was made on a day when a number of players were negatively affected, including Paul Bados of Spain who was forced to withdraw from his quarterfinals due to heat-related illness and Daniil Medvedev who entered the quarterfinals despite fighting again in conditions previously named “some of the worst (heat) I’ve ever had.”

While Diego Schwartzman lost to Karen Khachanov in conditions reaching 31 ° C with about 72% humidity, he criticized officials for not being in touch with reality: “The schedule is decided while sitting on the couch with vivid pictures,” he said.

After the opening match, Medvedev suggested a later start in line with other tournaments played in such humid conditions. Novak Djokovic agreed with him and suggested starting at 3 p.m. Now that is the reality.
