Tokyo is preparing for a typhoon, switching to Olympic rowing competitions

Tokyo 2020 is preparing for a typhoon that should hit the city early next week, and organizers have already moved in advance around rowing in anticipation.

Olympics organizers moved the races Monday through Sunday, while the second rounds were moved forward on Saturday. As competitors are already battling high temperatures in Tokyo, the local organizing committee is also now preparing for the typhoon that will come to the Olympics early next week.

“Unlike earthquakes, we can predict the typhoon’s path so we can make plans and indeed, when it comes to rowing, as a preventative measure, we have decided to change the schedule of events,” said Takaya Masa, a spokeswoman for the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee. it is not uncommon, and we understand the burden it will have on athletes. We carefully observe the typhoon’s path to make decisions as a precautionary measure. If it reaches the mainland, there could be damage, and if this is the case, we will take responsible action.

“At this point, I can’t offer you exactly what will happen, but we’ll keep an eye on it.”

The dismissal means that some competitors who took part in the opening ceremony, such as the British Mohamed Sbihi, will have to compete the next day. The USOPC said the decision to move the schedule was “due to bad weather for Monday”.

Although organizers are optimistic that the storm will only affect rowing, they are in close contact with the Japan Meteorological Agency. The storm was upgraded from a tropical cyclone to a typhoon on Friday and is expected to hit Tokyo early next week.

“The ability of the Japan Meteorological Agency and their ability to predict what lies ahead is a very big plus, so we are fortunate to have such technology available,” said Christophe Dubi, sporting director of the International Olympic Committee.

“We made the decision a few days before rowing. This is expected, which is a good thing because it’s not that day or minute when we have to make a call. So this is a comfortable environment for us to be inside.”
