TORONTO – Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews underwent joint surgery on Friday and is expected to take “at least” six weeks to recover.

The team said Matthews, who won the Rocket Richard Trophy last season as the NHL’s top scorer, was operated on after “consultation with Maple Leafs specialists and medical staff”.

Maple Leafs said Matthews experienced discomfort after he increased his training on the ice this week.

The 23-year-old from Arizona scored 41 goals in 52 games last season, despite missing four games that began in February with a long-term joint problem. Toronto did not specify on which joint surgery was needed, nor whether the injuries were related.

Toronto should open the regular season on October 13 at home against Montreal.
