The remaining U.S. national team in the women’s beach volleyball competition continued its search for a medal on Monday as April Ross and Alix Klineman achieved a consecutive victory over Cuba in their first match in the knockout round.
Ross and Klineman beat Lidy and Leila 21-17, 21-15 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Two weeks after losing at the 2016 Rio Olympics, Kenny Harrison set up a world record in the 100m hurdles with a time of 12.20.
The former University of Kentucky athlete, who is now in the school’s Hall of Fame, won the NCAA 60 and 100-meter hurdles title in her final year 2014-15. Several other former cats, including colleagues with groins Sydney McLaughlin, also competes in Tokyo.
Harrison became the American team with a time of 12.47 in Olympic trials. She finished second in the semifinals behind Britain’s Anderson of Jamaica, to advance to the medal round. The Olympic record is 12.35, set by Australian Sally Pearson at the 2012 London Games.
The event will be broadcast live at 22:50 ET, following the men’s long jump final at 21:20 ET.

The USA team will play against the host Japan in one of the two games in the quarterfinal round of the Olympic baseball tournament (8:00 ET) on Monday.

On Saturday, another couple from the U.S., Kelly Claes and Sarah Sponcil, lost 2-1 to Canada, eliminating them from the round of 16.
